Question

TibiaQA.com is happy to announce the first edition of the Star Contributor contest. The goal of this contest is to promote and reward high-quality content posted on TibiaQA.

Contest rules:

• The contest runs from 26. October 00:01 CEST, until 18. November 23:59 CET
• All posts by registered users, who confirmed their e-mail address will automatically take part in the contest
• Users participate by either asking or answering questions on TibiaQA; it is also completely acceptable to answer own questions
• All posted content must follow TibiaQA guidelines - posts that fail to do so will either be closed or removed and will not participate in the contest
• Users that collect the highest amount of net votes (upvotes minus downvotes) on the questions and answers they posted during the contest period will win prizes
• Votes on comments are not counted
• Creating new accounts just to upvote own content or downvote other participants content is prohibited and will be monitored during the contest
• The activity on TibiaQA.com will be monitored for any attempts to gain an unfair advantage on the received votes
• TibiaQA.com holds the right to take preventive actions on any attempts to gain an unfair advantage during the contest
• All votes on winning entries will be checked manually for fraud and cheating attempts

Rewards:

1. Golden trophy of excellence + Badge of glory + Rune Emblem of choice
2. Silver trophy of excellence + Rune Emblem of choice
3. Bronze trophy of excellence + Rune Emblem of choice

There are only 9 hours left until the event is over. I'll run the scripts to discover any cheating attempts and to count the votes on Monday evening and then post the results.

Will we have punishment for people downvoting other users on purpose, or even upvoting content in order to benefit guild friends, for example (I'm not accusing anyone of anything, I'm just talking about potential problems that can appear. I want to help you only. I'm not trying to be negative or anything against the contest, ok?). Sometimes it can be hard to detect a cheating on a contest like this, although I loved the idea here.

Also, I'm usually quite honest and fair with upvotes, eventually I always upvote good and clear content (using Reddit for a while made me do that)... But I was thinking, why another competitor on this event would give me upvotes when it means that they can potentially be out of the dispute? Even if I produce always good content, if I get silent on upvotes on other users, I will basically keep the lead for me if people are like me and never refrain from upvoting decent content. The same rational thinking can be applied to downvotes complexity: Maybe eventually people can do a downvote raid on the middle of the competition in order to make net votes from other contenders low, but they certainly will be surgical and downvote stuff that will not lead to a fraud detection...

Anyway, that was just a "two cents" thought from me. I really want this contest to be a wonderful and fun one to participate

As I can see moderator have the last word, if you get a lot downvotes and this is only by crush you on the event, he can remove it and apply this:

I do a single downvote to see how it works (Yes little curious), and revert it later. I belive if I don't use against other users, they don't use it with me.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. You have valid concerns, but rest assured that I have the necessary tools to monitor and evaluate all the votes that were handed out. Any attempts to upvote own content from another account/having friends mass upvote or downvote other participants content will be easy to discover. You are right though, that other users may be less willing to upvote good content. For now, I don't see a big problem here and other users also engage in voting. We will also evaluate the situation at the end of the contest.

Interesting! Nice idea for a contest! Upvotes on questions and answers posted in the past can be counted if they are voted during the period of the contest?

Also, how the net votes obtained from the previous months will be separated from the net votes made on the next weeks? Just curious about these two details.

As it's stated in the rules - only votes obtained on the questions and answers posted during the contest will count. Votes on questions and answers from past months won't be taken into consideration.
As for counting votes - I'll probably have a simple script count them at the end of the contest.

If the contest going good, in future you can implement permanent system to be rewarded with your fansite item like other fansites like Tibia Royal of really good way to involve the community.

Thanks for the idea. I was indeed thinking about having the fansite item given to the most active players (that obtain X reputation points), however, we still don't have the fansite item and it may take a few months until we have one. Until then, contests similar to this one can be expected.

I hope the next Star Contributor contest will be rated by the close circle of the site Admins with collaboration with Cipsoft members.

Sad to say, but right now it doesn't matter what content I (or anyone else) will create, and how much time I will spend on that. It's more about "vote tactics" than the value of content. People whose compete in contest obviously won't give any Upvote for their rivals. What I mean, the 3 first persons just vote to each other content, and it won't go beyond this circle. The contest last 4 days (from 24 overall) and I already know all three winners (If don't believe, just ask private. I am not a Prophet but I know). I know how it sounds but I had to say it.

Of course, I will stay an active member, just hope next contest will be clear and votes/views won't be the main factor to choose winners because It is very exposed to manipulation (other accounts used to Upvotes from VPN to avoid accusation; voting tactics; agreements between participants etc.)

Thanks for sharing your concerns. I want to ensure, that all the votes will be evaluated at the end of the contest. Any attempts to gain an unfair advantage will result in disqualification of all the involved parties. Mass upvoting own content is easy to discover, even if done from various IPs.

Excellent point made, Maleigihas. I guess that making the votes from Ellotris counting more would be way more efficient and interesting for the development of the contest (making any upvote from him count 10 or 5 upvotes). This way we would have the weight of a neutral person and reliable user on the contest + the community would still have the power to upvote decent and worth content. I guess it would be a good thing to think for the next contest to be held here :)
